Anti-gliadin antibodies in autism

Gluten free diet is becoming increasingly popular across the Western society and even more so among those suffering from autism. ..Study by Dr. Lau and colleagues  from the Celiac Disease Center in Columbia University, New York, lends further support to the use of gluten free diet by autistic subjects.

Functioning MRI Brain Scan Evidence Probiotics Affects Brain Function

Excerpt

Question arises, do we biologically change the functioning of brain by altering the composition of intestinal bacteria using probiotics? Animal studies certainly demonstrate this phenomenon, but is it true in humans as well.

Altered Fermentation of Undigested Food by Gut Bacteria in Autism: Clues to Treatment Strategies

Evidence indicates that gut bacteria may be at the crossroads of genetics, digestive enzymes of  autism spectrum disorders.  This study of altered corroborates the hypothesis and provides clues to how altered bacteria may be involved in causing and sustaining autism.

Antibiotics in meat: A case for organic foods?

Excerpt

As much as 300 mg of antibiotics is used in production of every kilogram of meat and eggs. Wow!

This use of subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics not only has the potential to alter the meat itself but also what comes along with, i.e. antibiotic resistant bacteria. By the way, small amounts of antibiotics can still be detected in the meat that is ready for you to buy and then eat!

Does Influenza and Antibiotic Use During Pregnancy Increase Autism

Facebook AutismItsGutStupid group page          Digestion, Health, Nutrition

Facebook Dr. Anil          Autism It’s Gut Stupid

  • Infection results not only just immune activation but also increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut along with alterations of intestinal bacteria or dysbiosis. Such intestinal changes can results in passage of potentially noxious substances/signals across the placenta to the developing fetus.
  • These chemicals transferred to fetus and its developing brain may include maternal antibodies as a result of infection, abnormal neurochemical signals due to altered brain-gut-bacteria communications in mother, absorbed bacterial toxic products with their antibodies as well as potentially noxious semi-digested food products.

Moms’ Probiotic Use Reduces Eczema

  • Probiotic use during pregnancy and early breast-feeding period is safe and effective in reducing the risk of skin eczema rash or atopic dermatitis in early childhood.
  • Authors speculated that maternal use of probiotics modulates immune structure/function  via the fetus-placental unit during pregnancy. Maternal use of probiotics does impact on gene expression in the placenta as well as the gastrointestinal system of growing fetus.

Enteric nervous system or second brain is more susceptible to mitochondrial dysfunction than brain

  • Nervous system of the gut also known as enteric nervous system is susceptible to mitochondrial dysfunction even more than the brain and is consistent with increased prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with primary inherited mitochondrial disorders.
  • Not all regions of the gut and enteric nervous system or the “Second Brain” are equally affected during illness, a phenomenon seen in the central nervous system as well.

Inflammation is an important component of chronic disease states including disorders affecting brain. Neuro-inflammation creates disruption in brain cells as well as signalling pathways and as such may have important role in neuro-behavioral manifestations of autism spectrum disorders. Maintaining good oral-dental health is part of the 12-point autism treatment program.

  1. I suggest avoid taking probiotic with food so as not to subject the probiotic bacteria to peak digestive acid and juices
  2. Since the administered probiotic bacteria are transient inhabitants in the gut, I recommend taking probiotic twice a day in order to maintain a steady state and avoid sharp fluctuations.
  3. Data suggests that even killed probiotic bacteria may provide some health benefits

Fecal bacteriotherapy

This involves transfer of entire bacterial flora from a healthy donor to the sick recipient. It has been used successfully to treat refractory as well as severe/recurrent  cases of C. difficile colitis as well as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Protocol

• Protocols/recepies vary. I am not aware of any randomized controlled trials to examine most issues related to fecal transplantation.

  • Propionic acid is contained in many food preservatives. Calcium propionate is FDA approved food preservative widely used in wheat, bread, cheese, juices, as well as dried fruit.
  • Propionic acid in food represents only a small fraction of what is encountered in gut as a result of bacterial metabolism.
  • Absorbed prioinic acid once absorbed into the blood circulation crosses the blood brain barrier and enters the brain where it can exert its affects.

Propionic acid or propionate in healthy kids

  • Consumption of large amounts of propionate makes kids irritable, inattentive,  and restless associated with sleep problems [Dengate 2002]
