Desulfovibrio: does it cause autism?

Excerpt

Differences in gastrointestinal flora between autistic children especially those with severe manifestations and controls has been documented in several studies. Literature also documents lower biodiversity of bacteria in autism and many other chronic disorders depriving the human body of full complement of types of bacteria needed for optimal gut health and immune system.

Anti-gliadin antibodies in autism

Gluten free diet is becoming increasingly popular across the Western society and even more so among those suffering from autism. ..Study by Dr. Lau and colleagues  from the Celiac Disease Center in Columbia University, New York, lends further support to the use of gluten free diet by autistic subjects.

Functioning MRI Brain Scan Evidence Probiotics Affects Brain Function

Excerpt

Question arises, do we biologically change the functioning of brain by altering the composition of intestinal bacteria using probiotics? Animal studies certainly demonstrate this phenomenon, but is it true in humans as well.

Antibiotics in meat: A case for organic foods?

Excerpt

As much as 300 mg of antibiotics is used in production of every kilogram of meat and eggs. Wow!

This use of subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics not only has the potential to alter the meat itself but also what comes along with, i.e. antibiotic resistant bacteria. By the way, small amounts of antibiotics can still be detected in the meat that is ready for you to buy and then eat!

Does Proximity to Freeway Traffic Increase Risk of Autism?

Dr. Volk and colleagues from the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California examined the effect of air pollution on the risk for autism. Residential proximity to major roads and freeways was used as a proxy for increased pollution. The results of the study were published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives (2011).

  • Infection results not only just immune activation but also increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut along with alterations of intestinal bacteria or dysbiosis. Such intestinal changes can results in passage of potentially noxious substances/signals across the placenta to the developing fetus.
  • These chemicals transferred to fetus and its developing brain may include maternal antibodies as a result of infection, abnormal neurochemical signals due to altered brain-gut-bacteria communications in mother, absorbed bacterial toxic products with their antibodies as well as potentially noxious semi-digested food products.

Moms’ Probiotic Use Reduces Eczema

  • Probiotic use during pregnancy and early breast-feeding period is safe and effective in reducing the risk of skin eczema rash or atopic dermatitis in early childhood.
  • Authors speculated that maternal use of probiotics modulates immune structure/function  via the fetus-placental unit during pregnancy. Maternal use of probiotics does impact on gene expression in the placenta as well as the gastrointestinal system of growing fetus.

Gut, Immune Function and Autism

Lack of a specific laboratory abnormality and reliance on symptom complex makes diagnosis of autism unclear. Role of combined genetics and environment is suspected. Immune dysfunction is being increasingly recognized in pathogenesis. Gut is at the cross-roads on interplay between immune and nervous system. Intestinal bacteria as they move from neonatal bacterial flora to the adult bacterial pattern play a crucial role in the final make-up of the immune system which is interacting with the nervous system. Any disturbances along in later life can still upset the proverbial apple-cart making things worse.

Using Old Stone Age Diet As Model For Autism Treatment Diet

Why our ancestors on paleolithic diet did not suffer modern diseases?

The answer to why these chronic diseases were uncommon in ancient times may lie in not comprised such a diet, rather what was absent!

In the context, grains and milk immediately pop up as potential answers.  The scientific research on gluten sensitivity/intolerance has undergone an exponential rise with the recognition that patients can actually suffer symptoms without having classic celiac sprue. Cow milk allergy and intolerance has been implicated in pathogenesis of many disorders and autism spectrum disorders may be one of them.

  2. Since the administered probiotic bacteria are transient inhabitants in the gut, I recommend taking probiotic twice a day in order to maintain a steady state and avoid sharp fluctuations.
  3. Data suggests that even killed probiotic bacteria may provide some health benefits

Constipation is occurs frequently in subjects with numerous chonic ailments including  autism or autistic spectrum disorders and sometimes it’s just labelled as “functional”. Overall it is complex and an overall understanding including involvement of “big brain” (central nervous system), “our second brain” (enteric nervous system ) i.e. nervous system in gut) and brain-gut axis may explain why constipation is common among those suffering from autism/ASD.
